New State Of Matter Discovered Appears To Compete With Superconductivity

Matter comes in many forms. Under everyday conditions, we find it in the four fundamental states: solid, gas, liquid, and plasma. But many more states are known to exist under more extreme conditions. A new potential state of matter has now been proposed and researchers think it competes with superconductivity. Superconductivity is obtained in certain materials at very low temperatures. Once they pass the specific temperature threshold they no longer have any electrical resistance. In superconductors, electrons don’t move singularly but in pairs and they form a superfluid, another curious state that moves without losing energy. As reported in Physical Review Letters, this superfluid state is not the only one developing in the material, other states emerging affect the electrons too. …

Six things to look out for in health in 2019

The NHS celebrated its 70th anniversary with tea parties, special church services and a “bumper” funding rise. But while those celebrations may be remembered fondly by those working in the health service as 2018 comes to an end, the storm clouds are gathering as the new year approaches. What does 2019 hold for the NHS and wider health agenda? The man with the plan As well as having shiny new announcements – including a new cancer strategy – the government is understood to want a commitment from the NHS to start hitting its waiting-time targets again. The key ones for cancer, A&E and routine operations are all being missed. It means the plan is likely to be released in two …

Russia: 4 dead in apartment collapse, apparent gas explosion

The nation’s top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said the collapse of a section of the ten-storey building was apparently caused by a gas leak. It happened before dawn when most residents were still asleep on the New Year’s Eve. Nearly 1,400 rescuers were searching for those who could have been buried under debris in temperatures of -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which are forecast to plunge to -24 degrees Celsius (-17 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight. Emergency officials admitted that they were racing against time as the frigid weather reduces the chances to find anyone alive. Local authorities initially said 68 of those registered in the collapsed section of the building were unaccounted for, but later tracked down some of …

Sanders says he was not aware of sexual harassment allegations on 2016 campaign, apologizes to women

(CNN)Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that he was not aware of the sexual harassment and pay disparity allegations during his 2016 presidential campaign, and apologized to “any woman who feels like she was not treated appropriately.” The former Democratic candidate stressed that his 2018 Senate re-election campaign had established new protocols for handling sexual harassment allegations. “We put forward the strongest set of principles in terms of mandatory training, in terms of women, if they felt harassed, having an independent firm that they can go to,” Sanders said. “And I think that that’s kind of the gold standard of what we should be doing.” “Of course, if I run, we will do better next time,” he added of a …

Ten Bits Of The Best Science News We Heard All Year

Say what you will about this last year, but you have to admit that 2018 heralded some fascinating breakthrough scientific discoveries. For the first time, genealogy helped law enforcement officers solve a decades-old murder case and put an alleged serial killer behind bars (and a few others as well). We saw mice that were born to same-sex parents using stem cells go on to have healthy offspring. Male birth control pills were shown to be safe and effective in a trial study (a big win for biological womankind). A groundbreaking HIV vaccine was set to begin human testing in 2019, even though a certain administration suspended research to look for a potential cure. The ozone layer may be on its way to …

Trump Says Country Wants Border Wall, But That’s Not What Polls Say

Donald Trump insisted again Thursday that there’s “so much support” his “The people of our country want it,” Trump declared at a “I have never had so much support as I have in the last week over my stance for border security … or, frankly, the wall or the barrier. I have never had anything like it in terms of calls coming in, in terms of people writing in and tweeting. George Conway Zings President Trump After New York Times Report

a piece in The New York Times on Sunday. Presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway’s husband, George Conway, ever ready to take a swipe at Trump, brought the popcorn to social media. To which George Conway responded, “You don’t say.” Conway has a rather long and rich history of taking shots at the president on Twitter. For instance, who could forget when he came back at Trump after the president seemingly praised political strategist Roger Stone “Nice to know that some people still have guts!” Trump tweeted. Trump directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make hush-money payments to two women to protect Trump’s campaign for president. “Except for that little part where the US Attorney’s Office says that you directed and coordinated …

After The Video Of A Dog Who Didnt Realize He Was Being Abandoned Went Viral, Snoop Dogg Offers To Give Him A Home

It’s 2019 so it’s time to start the year with some positive news! Or at least a silver lining to a rather sad story. While much of the world is overwhelmed with the celebrations of Christmas and New Year, it seems that everybody is acting their best and the world is slowly turning into a better place. Unfortunately, the reality is not as pretty since there are still people who still have enough evil in their hearts to dump their pets in the street before Christmas. The video was originally shared by Rachel Butler who works as a regional manager for RSPCA, an animal welfare charity RSPCA‘s press representative said that they are grateful to all the millions of people …

Anti-drone equipment for airports

Military leaves Gatwick after drone chaos How can a drone cause so much chaos? The military was brought in by the government and was only stood down on Wednesday this week. The Ministry of Defence said personnel from the Royal Air Force Regiment were involved in the deployment. Last year it was reported that the MoD had ordered the Drone Dome system developed by Israeli company Rafael. The system has a range of several miles and uses four radars to give 360-degree detection to identify and track drones. However, it is understood the MoD is still waiting to receive the system and alternative technology was in use at Gatwick.

Warren cracked open a beer while discussing her ‘kind of an amazing day.’ She continued: “It’s been kind of an amazing day. That Viral Video Of Toads Hitchhiking On A Friendly Python Is Actually Pure Filth

Yeah! 2018 is over! The year that brought us “shower rat is in incredible pain, actually” and “the adorable bear cub in that video you shared probably died” has finally been defeated! It’s time to march forward into the bright future of 2019, a year of hope, progress, and – wait, what? *sigh* We regret to inform you that 2019 is full of horny toads confusedly sexually assaulting a gigantic python. – Paul Mock, a farmer from the northern Australian town of Kununurra, found the reptile-amphibian orgy over the weekend after a local storm. The 68-millimeter (2.7-inch) rainfall had flushed out dozens of toads from his dam – and some, as Paul’s brother Andrew commented on a viral image of the event, …

Someone Is Trying To Take Entire Countries Offline

Gatwick Airport is Britain’s second busiest by passenger volume, and Europe’s eighth. And yet it was brought to a standstill for two days by two people and a single drone. Its vulnerability reminded me of a conversation I had two years ago, at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon with cybersecurity investor Sergey Gribov of Flint Capital. He was talking up one of his investments, an industrial cybersecurity firm based in Israel called CyberX. Half-bored, I girded myself for his pitch. They usually go like this: “The internet is full of hackers! They want to steal your data and your money! If only companies used my company’s awesome product, we would all be safe!” I have heard hundreds of pitches …
