Federal employees union sues government over lack of pay

(CNN)A federal employee labor union is suing the US government for requiring “essential” employees to work without pay during the partial government shutdown. The union’s president, J. David Cox, called the requirement that some federal employees work without pay “inhumane” in a statement Monday. “Our nation’s heroes, AFGE members and their families deserve the decency of knowing when their next paycheck is coming and that they will be paid for their work,” he said, adding that many of the affected workers are veterans or law enforcement. “Our intent is to force the government and the administration to make all federal employees whole.” The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night. New State Of Matter Discovered Appears To Compete With Superconductivity

Matter comes in many forms. Under everyday conditions, we find it in the four fundamental states: solid, gas, liquid, and plasma. But many more states are known to exist under more extreme conditions. A new potential state of matter has now been proposed and researchers think it competes with superconductivity. Superconductivity is obtained in certain materials at very low temperatures. Once they pass the specific temperature threshold they no longer have any electrical resistance. In superconductors, electrons don’t move singularly but in pairs and they form a superfluid, another curious state that moves without losing energy. As reported in Physical Review Letters, this superfluid state is not the only one developing in the material, other states emerging affect the electrons too. …

Six things to look out for in health in 2019

The NHS celebrated its 70th anniversary with tea parties, special church services and a “bumper” funding rise. But while those celebrations may be remembered fondly by those working in the health service as 2018 comes to an end, the storm clouds are gathering as the new year approaches. What does 2019 hold for the NHS and wider health agenda? The man with the plan As well as having shiny new announcements – including a new cancer strategy – the government is understood to want a commitment from the NHS to start hitting its waiting-time targets again. Russia: 4 dead in apartment collapse, apparent gas explosion

The nation’s top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said the collapse of a section of the ten-storey building was apparently caused by a gas leak. It happened before dawn when most residents were still asleep on the New Year’s Eve. Nearly 1,400 rescuers were searching for those who could have been buried under debris in temperatures of -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which are forecast to plunge to -24 degrees Celsius (-17 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight. Emergency officials admitted that they were racing against time as the frigid weather reduces the chances to find anyone alive. Local authorities initially said 68 of those registered in the collapsed section of the building were unaccounted for, but later tracked down some of …

Sanders says he was not aware of sexual harassment allegations on 2016 campaign, apologizes to women

(CNN)Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that he was not aware of the sexual harassment and pay disparity allegations during his 2016 presidential campaign, and apologized to “any woman who feels like she was not treated appropriately.” The former Democratic candidate stressed that his 2018 Senate re-election campaign had established new protocols for handling sexual harassment allegations. “We put forward the strongest set of principles in terms of mandatory training, in terms of women, if they felt harassed, having an independent firm that they can go to,” Sanders said. “And I think that that’s kind of the gold standard of what we should be doing.” “Of course, if I run, we will do better next time,” he added of a …

Ten Bits Of The Best Science News We Heard All Year

Say what you will about this last year, but you have to admit that 2018 heralded some fascinating breakthrough scientific discoveries. For the first time, genealogy helped law enforcement officers solve a decades-old murder case and put an alleged serial killer behind bars (and a few others as well). We saw mice that were born to same-sex parents using stem cells go on to have healthy offspring. Male birth control pills were shown to be safe and effective in a trial study (a big win for biological womankind). A groundbreaking HIV vaccine was set to begin human testing in 2019, even though a certain administration suspended research to look for a potential cure. The ozone layer may be on its way to …

George Conway Zings President Trump After New York Times Report

a piece in The New York Times on Sunday. Presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway’s husband, George Conway, ever ready to take a swipe at Trump, brought the popcorn to social media. To which George Conway responded, “You don’t say.” Conway has a rather long and rich history of taking shots at the president on Twitter. For instance, who could forget when he came back at Trump after the president seemingly praised political strategist Roger Stone “Nice to know that some people still have guts!” Trump tweeted. Trump directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make hush-money payments to two women to protect Trump’s campaign for president. “Except for that little part where the US Attorney’s Office says that you directed and coordinated …
