Twitter Users Explode Over Trump Administration’s Mexico Border Terrorists Lie

That was MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s sardonic reply to reports that President Donald Trump’s administration had wildly overstated the number of known or suspected terrorists stopped at the U.S.-Mexico border last year. This is markedly less than the “nearly 4,000” claimed by the Trump White House over the weekend. Others on Twitter, including lawmakers, joined Maddow in condemning the lie:

When your child vapes, what’s a parent to do?

(CNN)When Sonya Kennedy learned that her 12-year-old son, Ryder, had tried vaping, she was “mortified.” “It’s a bad habit that I started realizing parents didn’t know about,” she said. Health experts say parents whose kids are vaping often don’t know what to do or where to turn for help. While federal authorities grapple with how to regulate e-cigarettes on a broad scale and while leading tobacco company Altria invests billions in e-cigarette maker Juul, parents are scrambling at home to deal with nicotine dependence — or to prevent their kids from getting hooked on something that’s ubiquitous at many schools. Some are even approaching addiction rehab programs in hopes of weaning their kids off these products. “It’s all over social …

Supreme Court Rules Against Mystery Company With Possible Ties To Mueller Probe

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to block the subpoena and the federal appeals court in Washington issued an opinion soon after that revealed the size of the fine, but little additional information about the company or the foreign government that owns it. A three-judge panel of the federal appeals court in Washington had in December upheld the issuance of the subpoena and a contempt order issued by a district court judge when the company failed to comply. The panel’s opinion on Tuesday elaborated on its reasons for ruling against the company, rejecting its arguments that it was protected by a federal law that generally protects foreign governments from lawsuits in the United States. The unsigned opinion from the appellate …

An all-female Marine platoon just made history alongside the men at boot camp.

MCRD Parris Island, SC /Flickr On Friday, January 11, about 50 female Marines will train alongside their male counterparts at a facility in Parris Island, South Carolina. This marks the first time in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps that men and women have trained together at boot camp. However, the move is more out of necessity than part of a larger attempt by the Marines to integrate. “A lack of female recruits during the winter training cycle made it more practical to shut down the all-female battalion at Parris Island and roll the remaining 50 women into a male battalion,” The New York Times wrote. In the past, Marine Corps leaders have said that by training separately from …

Why Russia is getting back 30 World War II tanks from Laos

(CNN)Russia is taking back World War II-era tanks from Laos because, well, Moscow needs a star, lots of them. “No tank affected the outcome of World War 2 as the as the Soviet T-34 Medium Tank series,” according to the militaryfactory.com website. Some 57,000 were built before the war ended in 1945, a number so large that “availability in numbers certainly played well for the Soviets as T-34s could swarm enemy positions seemingly at will,” militaryfactory.com says. T-34 production continued into the Cold War, with more than 80,000 produced in all. Thousands were exported around the world. And while the Soviet Union and then Russia have produced more modern tanks since, the T-34 holds a strong place in Russian hearts. …

According to HB2, signed by former Gov. Pat McCrory (R) in March 2016, prohibited transgender people from using restrooms that align with their gender identities. The bill sparked an instant backlash and was condemned by everyone from Hillary Clinton to Bruce Springsteen, who nixed a performance in Greensboro over the legislation.  At present, this A Netflix spokeswoman told HuffPost the streaming network had no comment but confirmed that “the law was a factor in our decision not to film in North Carolina.” A number of LGBTQ advocacy groups and individuals applauded the news. White House says tax ‘refunds will go out’ amid shutdown

Washington (CNN)Americans can still expect to get their tax refunds even though the Internal Revenue Service has been swept up in the federal government shutdown. At the time, the OMB’s general counsel disagreed with the IRS chief counsel’s position and said tax refunds could not be paid out during a shutdown. Faced with the latest shutdown, the Treasury Department last week asked the current OMB general counsel to revisit the 2011 memo and a supplemental memo was submitted to OMB this past Friday. In a statement, the IRS said the agency has always held the view that it has the authority to pay out tax refunds despite a lapse of appropriations during a shutdown. “We are committed to ensuring that …

Video surfaces of Trump giving advice for getting over a concrete wall in 2004. Seriously.

For every Trump statement, there’s an equal and opposite previous statement. It’s basically scientific law that for everything our current president says, something he previously said directly counters or contradicts it. The people of the internet have made a game out of finding Trump tweets that don’t age well (here are 31 examples, just for funsies) and one entrepreneur even created now-sold-out flip flops with contradicting Trump tweets printed on them. Good times, America! “I wanted to highlight this hypocrisy,” said the creator of the flip flops. Posted by INVENTIONS INSIDER on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 A newly unearthed video gem makes Trump’s arguments for his “big, beautiful wall” sound even sillier than they already do. For two plus years, we’ve …

A construction worker made this life-sized ‘Where’s Waldo?’ cutout for hospitalized children to follow and play along.

Where’s Waldo? The children in an Indiana children’s hospital have the answer, thanks to construction worker Jason Haney. When a new wing of Memorial Children’s Hospital (now known as Beacon Children’s Hospital) in South bend, Indiana was under construction in 2016, Haney hid an eight-foot cutout of the elusive literary figure in various parts of the structure under construction. The children had the task of finding Waldo from the windows of their hospital rooms next door. As soon as Waldo was spotted, Haney would move the cutout to a different location. Now that the wing of the Hospital has been completed, Waldo is still on display for children to enjoy. Haney understands the importance of bringing cheer into children’s lives, …
