Crew of crashed French fighter jet confirmed dead

Paris (CNN)The crew of a French fighter jet that crashed Wednesday has been found dead, the country’s air force has confirmed. During a press conference Thursday, air force spokesman Colonel Cyrille Duvivier said the jet’s wreckage had been found, as well as fabric that was likely to belong to a parachute. “On this type of fighter jet you have two types of parachute, one for the crew in the ejector seat and the jet’s parachute, which can be used to brake once it lands,” Duvivier explained. The air force did not detect a distress signal from the jet, he added; a signal is usually triggered when a pilot ejects. The search for the missing crew members was restarted at 8 …

Boise television station KTVB reports Brenda Cridland of Meridian chalked up her weight gain to aging, but when her health started to quickly decline about eight months ago she decided to see a doctor. Cridland says she lost 65 pounds in the process, and learned the tumor was caused by undiagnosed endometriosis. She says she ignored red flags about her health, and hopes her story will remind other women that they shouldn’t avoid seeing a doctor.

You Will Not Believe What People Have Done To US National Parks Since The Government Shutdown Began

The US national parks are just wild at the moment. If you want to see what a Hobbesian Leviathan-style dystopia would look like, one where rule of law is supplanted by total anarchy, Yosemite National Park 2019 offers a little taster. Warning: it involves trash, vandalism, and lots of human poop. In response to the government shutdown, hundreds of thousands of federal employees – including national park staff – have been forced to take a temporary leave of absence, and they will not be able to return to work until Congress and the White House are able to come to some kind of agreement on the subject of Trump’s controversial border wall.  According to the Washington Post, Park Service estimates as many as 16,000 of …

Physical showed no major changes in health of Arizona woman in vegetative state who gave birth about 37 weeks later

(CNN)A doctor who gave a yearly checkup to a woman in a vegetative state about 37 weeks before she gave birth wrote that there were no major changes in her health, according to medical records sent to an Arizona court. The doctor had given the woman her physicals since 2009, when a court appointed her mother as legal guardian. CNN is not reporting the woman’s name because police are investigating the case as a sexual assault. “This woman was unable to move, she was unable to communicate, in other words she was helpless,” Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said. “This started as a sexual assault investigation from day one.” The woman, who is now 29, has been at the Hacienda …

Storing leftovers in aluminum foil can lead to these health risks

RELATED: 20 FOODS YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT IN THE REFRIGERATOR Using aluminum foil to cover food poses the same risk, since it doesn’t completely seal your food off from the air. “When air is present, that allows the bacteria to grow faster, so you really want to get the right containers and pack things appropriately,” says Lindsay Malone, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic. “Otherwise, your food isn’t going to last.” Malone’s golden rule for packing leftovers is to always seal them in shallow, air-tight containers to speed up the cooling process and keep bacteria off of your food. And make sure you put the food away in the fridge within two hours before the bacteria has time to wreak …

James Watson Stripped Of Honorary Titles Over Racial Comments

James Watson, who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the structure of DNA, has lost the honorary titles given to him by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), where he worked after 1968. The decision comes after extensive soul-searching and heated debate within CSHL. It exemplifies the conundrum of how to treat scientists who have made major contributions to their own field, but mistreat their colleagues, or make dangerously false statements about topics outside their expertise. Watson has been associated with vile comments for a long time. He belittled the immense achievements of Rosalind Franklin, whose work made the DNA discovery possible, in his memoir because she didn’t wear lipstick. Many years later he …

Shareholder sues Alphabet board over handling of harassment

San Francisco (CNN Business)An Alphabet shareholder is suing the company’s board of directors, claiming it helped cover up allegations of sexual misconduct by former Google executives. The New York Times first revealed details about harassment claims against multiple executives and their exit packages in October. The Information technology news website had previously reported that Google investigated whether Rubin had an inappropriate relationship while at the company. Martin’s lawsuit says that after the board investigated Rubin over sexual harassment claims, it was directly involved with approving his $90 million exit package when Rubin left the company in 2014. Alphabet board members Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt, Sundar Pichai and John Doerr are some of the defendants named in the lawsuit. …

Pentagon approves additional military support for border

(CNN)The Pentagon has approved additional military support for the Department of Homeland Security on the Southwest border, the Defense Department confirmed Monday. By the end of November the military had already placed over 10 miles of wire obstacles in Texas, Arizona and California. This support request is separate from the White House-led effort to potentially use existing Pentagon funds and personnel to help build new sections of a border wall. US troops will also continue to provide aviation support to Customs and Border Protection, which has historically involved US military aircraft flying CBP personnel to locations along the border. Defense officials had previously told CNN that the new mobile surveillance would include troops manning mobile observation posts that would involve …

When this young hockey player was bullied by racists, his hero sent him an inspirational message.

While playing hockey in Michigan, 13-year-old Ty Cornett was subjected to racial slurs and threats from other opponents, and more surprisingly, parents. The bullying started during a tournament last spring, and continued until eventually Cornett’s parents considered removing the child from hockey after an excessively bad incident earlier in the season.   But when Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban was tipped off to the bullying by the father of one of Cornett’s teammates, the professional hockey player texted Cornett a video offering the youth words of encouragement. Subban recorded the video while playing against the Detroit Red Wings in Little Caesars Arena, nearly 40 miles from Cornett’s home in Plymouth. “I can tell you this right now: As long as …

Jamal Khashoggi is still being used as a political commodity

In the 100 days since Saudi officials brutally murdered Jamal Khashoggi in their Istanbul consulate, there has been a massive international outpouring of condemnation. Yet the whereabouts of Khashoggi’s body remains unknown. The Saudis say they handed his body to “local accomplices” but refuse to name them, and Turkish investigators who have pieced together his final hours from closed-circuit TV footage have failed to fully investigate where the trail finally leads. TIME magazine names 2018 ‘Person of the Year’ But far from feeling like a leap forward in the public’s perception of what happened, it seems to throw even greater doubt over investigative efforts since the murder. Almost two weeks after Khashoggi was killed, Saudi authorities finally relented — but …

Man who tried to pay for sex loses appeal

He drove off but then returned a few minutes later and repeated the same gesture. ‘Scared and ashamed’ The judge at his trial in July last year said that because of his predatory, sexualised stalking of a woman, heartlessly putting the victim through a court hearing and showing no regrets or remorse, an immediate sentence of three months’ imprisonment was appropriate. An appeal was heard at Omagh County Court in October 2018, during which the victim was compelled to give evidence for a second time. She said she felt scared and ashamed at what had happened. She also said: “I was quite surprised as well. He is quite a handsome man.” The judge rejected the defence argument at the appeal …

China hosts surprise visit by Kim Jong Un amid US tensions

Beijing (CNN)North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week made his fourth visit to China, arriving in the country for a three-day stay at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, according to state media. Though traffic was blocked off in Beijing in anticipation of Kim’s arrival, police in the Chinese capital appeared to be much less strict compared to the North Korean leader’s three previous visits to the country in 2018. Curious onlookers were allowed to stand on both sides of the road behind a police line as Kim’s motorcade came out from the station and drove onto the Chang’an Avenue, a main street across the center of the city from east to west. Those staying in hotel rooms on …
